The Ecological Mill Map 2023 is now being launched

The Organic Mill Map 2023 guides to 35 mills with organic cultured grain in Sweden. Since the map was first launched in March 2022, four mills have been added. One of them is Munktorps Kvarn outside Köping, which is also represented at Eko-Portalen.see. The ecological Kvarnkartan received a warm reception and it is therefore nice to now be able to present the 2023 edition.

Cultured grains are types of grain that have not been processed in the same way as modern grain types. There is often a clear connection to the place where the cultivar is grown, for example Öland wheat or Dala Lantvete. By allowing the variety to adapt to the local conditions, the cultivars cope extra well without inputs such as chemical pesticides and climate-damaging artificial fertilizers. Cultivated cereals are also characterized by stronger root systems, better and stronger taste and often have longer straws than modern varieties.

On the updated Ecological Mill Map there are now 35 Swedish mills - from Vellinge in the south to Kungsgården in the north. Six of the mills can also be found on Eko-Portalen.see which is the collection page where buyers find a variety of Swedish organic products. A newly added mill on the map and Eko-Portalen is Munktorps Kvarn outside Köping.

- We have a small craft mill where we refine the farm's and the surrounding area's organic grain into nutritious flour. In our stone mill, the entire kernel of the grain is ground, including the germ, which gives the flour more flavor and a higher nutritional content. We have a crop farm with 330 hectares of organic cultivation of wheat, oats, rye, white clover seed, peas, field beans and silage. On part of the area, we are trying to combine our organic cultivation with regenerative methods, says Margareta Zimmerman Bertilsson at Munktorps Kvarn.

Interest in cultured cereals remains strong from both private individuals, shops and bakeries. The Ecological Mill Map is for more people to find all the fine mills that produce cultural grains in Sweden. The map is free to distribute, spread digitally and print to hang on the wall.

- With the Ecological Mill Map, we want to show the diversity of mills and cultured grains that exist in our country. Both the map and our digital platform Eko-Portalen.se aims to make it easier for buyers looking for organic products, for example cultured grains, says Elias Kvarnbäck, project manager at Organic Sweden.

The Nordic Cultured Cereal Days

A meeting place for those interested is The Nordic Cultured Cereal Days which this year takes place on June 26-28 in Järna. The days are arranged by Ekologiska Lantbrukarna, Sweden's Agricultural University and the association Allkorn.
