Sweden is a world leader in organic! 


Organic Sweden bringing forth Organic Annual Report together with Ekologiska Lantbrukarna, Ekomatcentrum and KRAV. The latest report was released in March 2023 and analyzes eco sales in 2022. The figures below are from the latest Ecological Annual Report


Organic food sales in Sweden
8,2 percent of food sales are organically certified. Sweden ranks fifth in the world in terms of per capita consumption of organic food. Only Switzerland, Denmark, Luxembourg and Austria are ahead.


Organic food in the public sector in Sweden
37 percent of food purchases are organic in public kitchens. No country in the world has a higher proportion of organic food in hospitals, nursing homes, schools and other public sector activities. In 2017, the government set the goal that the proportion of organic food purchases in the public sector should reach 60 percent by 2030.


Organic agricultural area in Sweden
Today, 20 percent of Sweden's agricultural area is organically certified. Only five countries in the world – Lichtenstein, Samoa, Austria, Estonia and Sao Tome and Principe – have a higher percentage of organic farmland. In 2017, the government set the goal that Sweden's organic agricultural land should amount to 30 percent by 2030. Unfortunately, however, the organic agricultural area has decreased between 2019 and 2022, both in absolute numbers and in relative numbers compared to conventional agricultural area.


Export of organic food from Sweden
Sweden's export of organically certified products is estimated to amount to just over SEK 1 billion. 


Organic farming area within the EU
The share of organic agricultural area within the EU has grown by 66% between 2012 and 2022 and today 8,5 percent of the agricultural area within the EU is organically certified. As part of the EU's European Green Deal, the EU has set the goal that the organic agricultural area should constitute 25 percent of the total agricultural area by 2030.
