The plant is classified as a legume and its fruit resembles a sugar pea and it is the one that is ground down to a powder that becomes carob powder. Carob powder resembles cocoa in every way, but the difference is that it is virtually fat-free, it contains no caffeine and it is said to counteract the sweet tooth.
