Cocoa powder Nacional Ecuador Slowroast ECO

Cocoa powder is not the same as ground cocoa beans. Instead, cocoa powder is produced by pressing cocoa mass while heating to extract the cocoa butter and the press cake, which is then ground into cocoa powder. Our raw cocoa powder is cold-pressed without heating, which gives it a slightly coarser texture.

The cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao), which means "food of the gods" in Latin, is the tree that gives rise to cocoa. The tree thrives in the shade of other tropical trees and its flowers, which sit directly on the trunk and larger branches, form cocoa fruits that contain cocoa beans. Each fruit can contain between 25 and 50 cacao beans surrounded by tart pulp with the flavor of gooseberries and black currants. The cacao tree originally came from Mexico, Central and South America, but today it is also grown in Africa, Asia and other tropical regions.
