Star anise reveals a flavor profile similar to anise, and this gives rise to a sweet and spicy flavor with subtle hints of licorice. Star anise is an important spice in mulled wine, and it gives the drink a characteristic spicy and aromatic taste. Here's how to use star anise in mulled:Ingredients:
  • 2-3 star anises
  • 1 bottle of red wine (or non-alcoholic alternative if desired)
  • 1 dl sugar (or to taste)
  • 1 orange (peel and juice)
  • 10-12 cloves
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • 5-6 cardamom capsules
  • Possibly a splash of cognac or vodka (if you want to make a stronger version)
Instructions:
  1. In a large saucepan, pour in the red wine and add sugar. Heat the wine over low heat until the sugar dissolves, but do not let it boil.
  2. Cut the orange into slices and add both peel and juice to the wine.
  3. Add cloves, cinnamon sticks, and cardamom pods to the pan. You can place the star anise along with the other spices in a spice bag or tea strainer if you prefer for easier removal later.
  4. Let the mulled wine simmer on low heat for about 20-30 minutes to allow the flavors to mix well.
  5. If you want to make a stronger version, you can add a splash of cognac or vodka.
  6. When the mulled wine is ready, remove the star anise and other spices. You can use a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer to remove the spices if they were not in a bag or filter.
  7. Serve mulled wine warm in mugs or glasses. You can garnish with a slice of orange or cinnamon stick if desired.
